5 Tips to Take Better Pictures on Vacation

A vacation is a cherished memory that you’ll look back on for years to come.  Snapping some great shots makes the memories that much better and gives you something to share with your friends at home.  At the Bluewater resort, we want your trip to be memorable, so here’s 5 ways to take more of the beach home with you this summer.

#1: Pack the Right Gear

Before the trip, take a good look at that point and shoot camera you bought several years ago.  Technology has changed and it may be time to invest in a new camera.  More and more visitors are packing a larger digital camera, like the Nikon Coolpix 500, in addition to that tiny point-and-shoot.  You’ll also be surprised how low the prices are for a near-professional grade camera.  In addition to the camera, an extra memory card and battery will ensure you’re always ready to capture that moment.

The reason for a new camera is simple.  At the beach, you have to deal with harsh lighting, long shots, reflections and fast moving kids.  The solution is a camera with the benefits of a big professional camera with the ease of use of a simple point-and-shoot.

For an investment of less than a good meal out for the family, you can have a tool to preserve the memories for years to come.

#2: Use the Grid to Compose a Picture

Most cameras have an option to display a grid on the viewfinder.  This is a handy tool to help you compose better pictures.  Think of the rule of thirds, place the subject in the corner of the image and you’ll immediately see a difference.  A rule of thumb is to keep the horizon in the top 1/3 or bottom 1/3 and set your subject off to one side, like in the picture here.

Master the rule of thirds and you'll think you had a professional photographer following you around your vacation!

#3: Use Your Camera’s Settings

Most cameras have a setting for “Beach” or “Splashing Water.” These settings are designed to take into account.  These settings change the exposure, speed and lighting effects on your shots.  You’ll be amazed how much better a photo can look just by experimenting with the settings in your camera.

#4: Be the Photographer

Don’t be afraid to be the photographer, you’re on vacation so have fun with it.  Plan time to take photos, either in the morning or evening when the sun is at its best and get your traveling companions in on the action.  You’ll enjoy the fun of taking the shots and you friends will love seeing the results.  Part of being the photographer is finding the great angles.  Lying down in the sand or standing on top of a beach access can give you views you’d otherwise miss.  Most importantly, just have fun with it!

#5: Get in On the Action

Sure you want to get the great shot, but also remember you’re on vacation too.  Make sure to share the camera so you can be in some of the pictures.  Better yet, use that timer, setup the camera and get the whole crew in the picture.

Lastly, part of getting in on the action is leaving the camera alone from time to time.  Don’t stress out always trying to get pictures, sometimes the best memories are those not seen through the viewfinder.
